FAQs

Should I do a patch test before using your products?

Yes, definitely!

Even if you don’t have allergy-prone or sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis or rosacea, it’s important to patch test first. If your skin is at all sensitive then a patch test is vital.

For more details check out our patch test info page!

Can I use your products on my face?

Yes, all our products are suitable for use on the face and indeed anywhere on the body.

Our Intensive Hand Cream makes a particularly good face cream, as it’s ultra-rich, soft and nutritious. You can also use our Intensive Facial Oil.

What can I use on my baby’s cradle cap?

Cradle cap is a common and harmless occurrence of scaly patches on the scalp or hairline; it can be softened with gentle oils. We’d recommend our Bath & Body Oil to loosen cradle cap flakes; massage into the scalp and leave on either for an hour or overnight. You can gently comb it off, or wash with Natural Shampoo & Body Wash if necessary.

Skin Salvation ointment could be useful too, depending on how much hair your little one has, as obviously ointment isn't so easy to apply on thick hair.

What can I use on acne-prone skin?

Balmonds products are all about nourishing and hydrating the skin, keeping everything functioning healthily, so they can work very well for those prone to acne.

We’d suggest making sure skin is clean and well-looked after with a good daily skincare regime.

Our Scalp Oil works well as a hydrating and conditioning oil on acne-prone skin. It contains tea tree, rosemary, borage and nettle oils, as well as calendula and hemp seed.

We make an Omega-Rich Cleansing Oil which can be used as a cleanser by people with acne; even though it seems counterintuitive to use oil on acne, it often helps to use the oil cleansing method rather than foaming or soap based cleansers which can cause inflammation on sensitive skin.

And our Cooling Cream with menthol, aloe and lavender is a good choice for a light facial moisturiser.

It’s always worth making sure that toiletries are fragrance-free and as mild and gentle as possible, so as not to irritate sensitive skin.

As with any skincare product that you're using for the first time, especially on sensitive skin, we advise a patch test in the crook of the elbow or behind your ear for 24 hrs before using more widely.

Because we know how hard it can be for people to find skincare that work for their own unique skin, we also offer a 60 day money back guarantee on all first-time purchases from our website, so you can try them out over time without worrying about wasting yet more money.

For full terms and conditions see our Refunds & Returns page.

Do you make a sun cream?

Unfortunately we don’t have a sun cream in the range at the moment.

None of our products have a SPF so please be careful with applying them hot, bright sunlight. Our oils and ointments should not be applied to exposed skin in sunny conditions and are best used last thing at night.

Do you have any samples you can send me?

We don’t offer free samples, but because we know how hard it can be for people to find emollients that work for their own unique skin, we offer a 60 day money back guarantee on all first-time purchases from our website, so you can try them out over time without worrying about wasting yet more money.

For full terms and conditions see our Refunds & Returns page.

Are your products tested on animals?

We’re happy to say that none of our products or their ingredients have been tested on animals.

Our ointments (Skin Salvation and Tea Tree Balm) all contain locally-produced beeswax and so therefore are not suitable for vegans, but all our other products are entirely free from any animal ingredients or derivatives. They do not contain cow’s milk, egg or fish, animal-derived glycerin, keratin, lanolin, tallow, or shellfish.

Here's our blog about our vegan products which you might find useful.

Although EU regulations mean that no ingredients used in skincare products are tested on animals anymore, Balmonds choose our suppliers very carefully to ensure an ethical change of supply. We will not compromise on our stance over this and will not be testing on the animals ever.

Currently most of our products are 100% natural, made with extremely high quality, food-grade, minimally-processed natural raw ingredients, primarily cold-pressed oils and herbal tinctures. These products and their ingredients (hemp seed oil, beeswax, chamomile tincture, for example) have never been tested on animals and do not need a cut-off date.

For our three creams that do need a preservation system and therefore contain some synthesised ingredients, we use suppliers with high ethical standards and which choose to test on humans not animals.

Are your products safe for use in pregnancy?

Yes, all our products can be used in pregnancy!

As with any skincare product that you're using for the first time (especially in pregnancy when skin can become more sensitive than usual), we advise a patch test in the crook of the elbow or behind your ear for 24 hrs before using more widely, just to check that you're not sensitive to the few gentle, natural ingredients we use.

You might also be interested in our Rosehip Scar Oil, which is perfect for massage, to keep skin supple and to improve the appearance of stretch marks, post CS-healing, pregnancy melasma/hyperpigmentation, and can even be used for perineal massage.

Can I use your products around my eyes?

Yes, our products are suitable for use around the eyes, but we'd particularly recommend our most popular product, Skin Salvation, for that area. It's the mildest and richest salve, free from essential oils as well as from synthetic preservatives and perfumes.

In colder weather it can need some warming up in your fingers to soften it, as the beeswax can harden as the temperature drops. Once it's softened, just apply very gently to the area and reapply as often as needed throughout the day.

Can I use Skin Salvation anywhere on the body?

Yes, you can. It can be used even on very delicate areas of the body.

As with any skincare product that you're using for the first time especially on sensitive skin, we advise a patch test in the crook of the elbow or behind your ear for 24 hrs before using more widely, just to check that you're not sensitive to the few gentle, natural ingredients we use.

What’s the best product to take away on holiday?

Our award-winning hero product, Skin Salvation, is a fantastic natural all-rounder, a one-pot wonder that means you can ditch a lot of your separate skincare products and just take this instead; perfect for travelling light.

You can use it as lip balm, as a salve for sore noses in cold weather, as well as on cracked heels, rough skin, on hardworking hands (beloved of climbers, gymnasts and gardeners alike!), and to protect against chafing; it even works as a cleansing balm to remove mascara or the grime of a day on the road... and it is of course just a brilliant, deeply intensive moisturizer, essential for the dehydration experienced on long haul flights.

Can I get Skin Salvation on prescription?

We are very pleased to say that many of our customers now get their Balmonds on prescription. This is possible where GPs and dermatologists can see that there is clear benefit in their patients using skincare products that don't make their eczema worse. and are happy to prescribe them as part of an ongoing treatment regime.

The situation is that GPs are permitted to prescribe any product that benefits their patients even if it is not on their standard list of prescribed items, so long as the products concerned do not appear on the “drugs and other substances not to be prescribed under the NHS Pharmaceutical Services” list, which ours do not.

S/he can handwrite a FP10 form for the product and that can be handed in to any pharmacy. We currently distribute via Lloyds, Quantum, Alliance, Cooperative and Rowlands Pharmacies as well as a number of independent pharmacies, but if your pharmacy has not come across us before they can contact us directly or through their distributor.

Once your doctor is satisfied that Skin Salvation is both safe and effective, it is important that s/he is convinced of the clear benefit to you in using it, in preference to what may be more widely available or cheaper products. Patients may need to have used the products for a length of time before your doctor is happy to prescribe them for ongoing use.

However, it is worth knowing that both the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (see: NICE Guidelines for the Management of Atopic Eczema) as well as The National Eczema Society clearly advise that doctors should put patient satisfaction first when choosing an emollient to prescribe. Best practice in the treatment of eczema in both children and adults is for practitioners to find the most appropriate product for individual patients rather than prescribing according to convention or on the basis of cost, so you have a very strong argument in favour of being prescribed an emollient that you find suitable to your own particular preferences and effective in the management of your condition. Both Skin Salvation and our Daily Moisturising Cream are rich, nourishing and soothing emollients which thousands of satisfied customers use daily to manage their dry skin conditions.

The prescribing of any product is entirely down to the doctor’s discretion; there may be financial considerations within the practice or Health Care Trust that prevent them being able to prescribe anything more expensive than usual emollients.

If there is still resistance then it might be worth getting in touch with the practice management or with your MP. There is no legal reason why a GP should not prescribe whatever they think might help their patient. If your GP or dermatologist requires further information we are very happy to talk to them; they can call us on 01273 623123.

What If I don’t get on with the products?

Because we know how hard it can be for people to find emollients that work for their own unique skin, we also offer a 60 day money back guarantee on all first-time purchases from our website, so you can try them out over time without worrying about wasting yet more money.

For full terms and conditions see our Refunds & Returns page.

Are your products vegan?

Our ointments (Skin Salvation and Tea Tree Balm) contain locally-produced beeswax and so therefore are not suitable for vegans.

New changes

I get Skin Salvation 250ml on subscription, why has the price increased so much? 23.99 to 29

Over the last few years, costs of the high quality natural raw ingredients we use to make Skin Salvation have risen dramatically. Although we’ve tried to minimise the impact to our customers, this year we’ve had to increase the cost of the finished product to reflect the price rises.

Buying the largest size of Skin Salvation on subscription still represents the best value ounce for ounce.

I/my child has eczema, what can I use?

We’d recommend you try Skin Salvation, our best-selling 100% natural balm which has been formulated to treat the symptoms of eczema. You can apply the balm as a daily emollient to keep skin moisturised, nourished, and protected.

Aside from Skin Salvation, the entire Balmonds range has been carefully formulated to be suitable for use on skin prone to eczema.

Why has the formula changed in Scar? What is different? Why is it different?

We’ve upgraded the formulation to include two fantastic new ingredients: sea buckthorn and borage, both natural oils which are exceptionally rich in vitamins, anti-inflammatory agents, and regenerative omega fatty acids, making them ideal additions to a formula designed to help look after healing skin.

Why has the formula changed for Shampoo? What is different? Why is it different?

The formulation of our all-in-one Hand, Hair & Body Wash (previously known as Natural Shampoo & Body Wash) has been tweaked to improve consistency and stability. We’ve improved the natural preservation system we use in the formulation so it now includes guar gum, which is an anti-static conditioning agent designed to leave hair feeling smooth and conditioned, and no longer use Japanese Honeysuckle.

(Guar is a natural compound derived from the guar plant.)

The complete list of ingredients in our new formulation is:

Aqua (water), Decyl Glucoside, Coco Glucoside, Heptyl Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Oryza Sativa (rice bran) extract, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Sesamum Indicum (sesame) seed oil, Cymbopogon Citratus (lemongrass) leaf oil, Stellaria Media (chickweed) extract, Chamomilla Recutita (chamomile) flower extract, Urtica Dioica (nettle) extract, Citric Acid, Calendula Officinalis (calendula) flower extract, Ocimum Basilicum (sweet basil) extract, Eugenia Caryophyllus (clove) bud oil, Potassium Sorbate, Dehydroacetic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Glycerin, Sorbic Acid, Benzyl Alcohol, Alcohol – trace from tinctures, Citral & Eugenol (from essential oils)

The old formulation:

Aqua (water), Decyl Glucoside, Coco Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl Hydrolyzed soy protein, Oryza Sativa Extract (rice bran), Heyptyl Glucoside, Cellulose Gum, Sesamum Indicum (sesame) seed oil, Cymbopogon Citratus (lemongrass) essential oil, Stellaria Media Extract (chickweed) extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower (chamomile) flower extract, Urtica Dioica (nettle) extract, Citric Acid, Lonicera Caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower extract, Calendula Officinalis (calendula) flower extract*, Ocimum Basilicum (sweet basil) extract, Eugenia Caryophyllus (clove) bud oil, Lonicera Japonica (Japanese honeysuckle) flower extract, Glycerin, Alcohol - trace from tinctures, Citral, Eugenol (from essential oils)

Why has the price increased?

This year we’ve made the decision to introduce new packaging to move us further along on our sustainability journey but are still sourcing very best quality ingredients to maintain our product quality. Ultimately this means that the cost of our raw ingredients has increased, and although we have tried to minimise the impact on our customers we’ve inevitably had to increase the price of our products.

What is the difference between Tea Tree Face Wash and Gentle Face Wash? Which one will be better for me?

Both our new washes have been carefully formulated with natural ingredients to be as gentle on sensitive skin.

Our Gentle Face Wash is completely unfragranced and essential oil free, making it suitable for those who might not be able to tolerate even natural fragrances.

Balmonds Tea Tree Wash has the same pure and gentle base formulation but includes powerfully purifying tea tree and lemongrass essential oils, making it suitable for those with oily or acne-prone skin.
