What Causes Scabs In My Ear?

What causes scabs in the ear?

If you’ve woken up to find your ears are scabby, it can be worrying as well as painful! Working out what might be going on can be a frustrating process.

In the majority of cases, scabs in your ear are not likely to be anything serious, and while the scabs will usually resolve themselves with some treatments at home, if they persist, get worse or are very painful, please consult your doctor.

Possible culprits for scabby ears include:

  • Spots/acne/pimples within the ear
  • Ear piercing infection
  • Scratching at a heat rash

Or it could be due to a flare-up of a chronic skin condition such as:

  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Seborrheic dermatitis

In all those cases, the area needs to be looked after very carefully. Follow these five steps:

  1. Keep it clean: use an unperfumed, natural wash for sensitive skin, to avoid aggravating the skin
  2. Wash with lukewarm (not hot or cold) water
  3. Pat dry very gently with a soft paper towel - don’t rub!
  4. Apply an antimicrobial, emollient oil or balm to area
  5. Do not poke ANYTHING into the ear canal

If there are scabs inside the ear canal, use a few drops of warmed oil dripped from a matchstick from outside the ear canal (see this article for details: How To Get Rid Of Eczema In The Ears
