FAQ

If your skin is prone to eczema, we’d suggest that you try our flagship product, Skin Salvation first.

This is the product we recommend if skin is broken or scratched raw from itching, as, being oil-based, it doesn’t sting on application, and is totally free from perfumes, preservatives and synthetic ingredients that can cause irritation on sensitive skin.

It was designed to be an effective, non-irritating, natural emollient that people can use both during flare-ups and as part of a long-term skincare regime and is great as an intensive overnight treatment.

Find out where to buy Skin Salvation on our Stockists page.

We also have a Sample Pack for £5 which contains 5ml pots of our three best-selling emollients: Skin Salvation, as well as Daily Moisturising Cream and Intensive Hand Cream (which are softer to apply and work for daily maintenance once the flare has reduced and there is no broken skin). The pack comes with a 20% off voucher code so that you can save money on a full-size pot if you find the samples help.

As with any skincare product that you're using for the first time especially on sensitive skin, we advise a patch test in the crook of the elbow or behind your ear for 24 hrs before using more widely, just to check that you're not sensitive to the few gentle, natural ingredients we use.

Of course Skin Salvation is not a cure for eczema, and we always advise customers to look at other things that can cause eczema flare-ups (including diet, laundry detergents, hard water, soaps, pet hair, pollen, dust, stress, environmental triggers as well as toiletries such as sun cream, body washes and shampoo) and avoid them as well. But the right emollient really can help sufferers to manage their condition.

Because we know how hard it can be for people to find emollients that work for their own unique skin, we also offer a 60 day money back guarantee on all first-time purchases from our website, so you can try them out over time without worrying about wasting yet more money. For full terms and conditions see our Refunds & Returns page.

Any of our products are suitable for rosacea – it really just depends which you’re most comfortable using. We have a thick, beeswax based salve, a lighter cream and a brilliant facial oil, all of which work well in combination on your face, depending on time of day and what works best for you.

Skin Salvation is a rich, nutritious salve that feeds the skin with the vitamins and oils it needs to regenerate healthily. Our Daily Moisturising Cream is a lighter, shea butter based moisturiser, great for daytime use.

You can try the salve, moisturizer and a richer Intensive Hand Cream (which is also really good on the face) in our Sample Pack

Our Intensive Facial Oil works perfectly as an overnight treatment for rosacea as it’s rich in soothing, regenerative rosehip oil.

For cleansing we’d recommend our non-comedogenic Omega-Rich Cleansing Oil with rosehip and calendula. Just massage into the face and remove with damp cotton wool or a warm, wet face cloth.

Because we know how hard it can be for people to find emollients that work for their own unique skin, we also offer a 60 day money back guarantee on all first-time purchases from our website, so you can try them out over time without worrying about wasting yet more money. We’d recommend Skin Salvation as a great moisturiser for those prone to psoriasis, because it’s natural, intensively hydrating and non-irritant.

It provides a protective semi-occlusive beeswax layer over dry skin to lock in moisture and keep irritants out; allows skin the time and space to regenerate and repair under that protective barrier softens and conditions rough or scaly skin, reducing irritation, itching and redness. It also nourishes the skin with the nutrients psoriasis sufferers are often depleted in, thus normalising skin cell production and strengthening the skin barrier function and it doesn’t further irritate the skin with perfumes, harsh synthetic ingredients and preservatives.

Other products that work well for those with psoriasis are:

Balmonds Bath & Body Oil - great for using during or after bathing, to lock in moisture and condition dry or scaly skin.

Balmonds Scalp Oil - especially good as an intensive overnight conditioning treatment for itchy, flaky scalps.

Balmonds Daily Moisturising Cream - a great daily product for maintaining soft, supple, hydrated skin

Yes, definitely!

Even if you don’t have allergy-prone skin, eczema, psoriasis or rosacea, it’s important to patch test first. If your skin is at all sensitive then a patch test is vital.

For more details check out our patch test info page!

Yes, all our products are safe to use in pregnancy!

As with any skincare product that you're using for the first time especially on sensitive pregnant people, we advise a patch test in the crook of the elbow or behind your ear for 24 hrs before using more widely, just to check that you're not sensitive to the few gentle, natural ingredients we use.

You might also be interested in our Rosehip Scar Oil, which is perfect for massage, stretch marks, post CS-healing, pregnancy melasma and even perineal massage!

And of course, our lovely all-natural Baby & Child Range.

Yes, all our products are suitable for use on the face and indeed anywhere on the body.

Our Intensive Hand Cream makes a particularly good face cream, as it’s ultra-rich, soft and nutritious.

Yes, all our products are suitable for use around the eyes. We'd particularly recommend our most popular product, Skin Salvation, for that area. It's the mildest and richest salve, free from essential oils as well as from synthetic preservatives and perfumes.

In colder weather it can need some warming up in your fingers to soften it, as the beeswax can harden as the temperature drops. Once its softened, just apply very gently to the area and reapply as often as needed throughout the day.

Our Intensive Facial Oil with Rosehip is also excellent for the delicate area about the eyes.

Cradle cap really needs something oily to soak in overnight and then it can be gently combed off in the morning, so we’d recommend you use the Bath & Body Oil or Chamomile Baby Oil.

Skin Salvation ointment could be useful too, depending on how much hair your little one has, as obviously ointment isn't so easy to apply on thick hair.

Yes, you can. It can be used even on very delicate areas of the body.

As with any skincare product that you're using for the first time especially on sensitive skin, we advise a patch test in the crook of the elbow or behind your ear for 24 hrs before using more widely, just to check that you're not sensitive to the few gentle, natural ingredients we use.

Balmonds products are all about nourishing the skin and regulating the normal cycle of regeneration and repair, keeping everything functioning healthily, so they can work very well for those suffering from acne.

We’d suggest making sure skin is clean and well-looked after with a good daily skincare regime.

Our Scalp Oil has some great purifying properties and works well on acne-prone skin. It contains tea tree, rosemary, borage and nettle oils, as well as calendula and hemp seed, to maintain good skin health.

We make an Omega-Rich Cleansing Oil which can be used by people with acne; even though it seems counterintuitive to use oil on acne, it often helps to use the oil cleansing method rather than foaming or soap based cleansers which can cause inflammation.

And our Cooling Cream with menthol, aloe and lavender is a good choice for a light facial moisturiser.

It’s always worth making sure that toiletries are fragrance-free and as mild and gentle as possible, so as not to irritate sensitive skin.

We have a blog here, covering teen skin issues.

Our award-winning hero product, Skin Salvation, is a fantastic natural all-rounder, a one-pot wonder that means you can ditch a lot of your separate skincare products and just take this instead; perfect for travelling light.

You can use it as lip balm, as a salve for sore noses in cold weather, as well as on cracked heels, rough skin, grazes, minor cuts, insect bites, on hardworking hands (beloved of climbers, gymnasts and gardeners alike!), to protect against chafing; it even works as a cleansing balm to remove mascara or the grime of a day on the road... and it is of course just a brilliant, deeply intensive moisturizer, essential for the dehydration experienced on long haul flights.

Unfortunately we don’t have a sun cream in the range at the moment.

None of our products have a SPF so please be careful with applying them hot, bright sunlight. Our oils and ointments should not be applied to exposed skin in sunny conditions and are best used last thing at night.

We are very pleased to say that many of our customers now get their Balmonds on prescription. This is possible where GPs and dermatologists can see that there is clear benefit in their patients using the products and are happy to prescribe them as part of an ongoing treatment regime.

The situation is that GPs are permitted to prescribe any product that benefits their patients even if it is not on their standard list of prescribed items, so long as the products concerned do not appear on the “drugs and other substances not to be prescribed under the NHS Pharmaceutical Services” list, which ours do not.

S/he can handwrite a FP10 form for the product and that can be handed in to any pharmacy. We currently distribute via Lloyds, Quantum, Alliance, Cooperative and Rowlands Pharmacies as well as a number of independent pharmacies, but if your pharmacy has not come across us before they can contact us directly or through their distributor.

Once your doctor is satisfied that Skin Salvation is both safe and effective, it is important that s/he is convinced of the clear benefit to you in using it, in preference to what may be more widely available or cheaper products. Patients may need to have used the products for a length of time before your doctor is happy to prescribe them for ongoing use.

However, it is worth knowing that both the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (see: NICE Guidelines for the Management of Atopic Eczema) as well as The National Eczema Society clearly advise that doctors should put patient satisfaction first when choosing an emollient to prescribe. Best practice in the treatment of eczema in both children and adults is for practitioners to find the most appropriate product for individual patients rather than prescribing according to convention or on the basis of cost, so you have a very strong argument in favour of being prescribed an emollient that you find suitable to your own particular preferences and effective in the management of your condition. Both Skin Salvation and our Daily Moisturising Cream are rich, nourishing and soothing emollients which thousands of satisfied customers use daily to manage their dry skin conditions.

The prescribing of any product is entirely down to the doctor’s discretion; there may be financial considerations within the practice or Health Care Trust that prevent them being able to prescribe anything more expensive than usual emollients.

If there is still resistance then it might be worth getting in touch with the practice management or with your MP. There is no legal reason why a GP should not prescribe whatever they think might help their patient. If your GP or dermatologist requires further information we are very happy to talk to them; they can call us on 01273 623123.

We don’t offer free samples, but you can purchase a Sample Pack from our website which has our three best-selling emollients in it - Skin Salvation, the Daily Moisturising Cream and our ultra-rich Intensive Hand Cream. This means you can try out the different moisturisers to see which works best for you before you commit to a full-size product. The pack comes with a voucher for 20% off your first full price purchase from the website, so you can recoup the price of the samples.

Although EU regulations mean that no ingredients used in skincare products are tested on animals anymore, Balmonds choose our suppliers very carefully to ensure an ethical change of supply. We do not export to countries which require animal testing and we will not compromise on our stance over this. We have not yet applied for certification with Leaping Bunny or Naturewatch, although this is something we will be looking into.

Currently all but three of our products are 100% natural, made with extremely high quality, food-grade, minimally-processed natural raw ingredients, primarily cold-pressed oils and herbal tinctures. These products and their ingredients (hemp seed oil, beeswax, chamomile tincture, for example) have never been tested on animals and do not need a cut-off date.

For our three creams that do need a preservation system and therefore contain some synthesised ingredients, we use suppliers with high ethical standards and which choose to test on humans not animals.
